Probably one of the most iconic places in Southwest and the whole country, Monument Valley, offers a 17 mile loop drive through unique geological rock formations on Navajo land. Although there are several rock formations here, the most well known are Elephant Butte, Three Sisters and Merrick Butte. These are some of the most photographed rock formations and you probably have seen images of these without even knowing their names.
Monument Valley can be easily visited in half a day, and many people stop by on their way to/from Arches National Park. You can expect to spend about three hours here allowing plenty of time for scenic turnouts at 11 different points. Be prepared for slow traffic and sand dust as the road is unpaved and pretty rough.
